Jewelry Styling Tips: How to Choose the Best Necklace for Your Neckline

Coordinating your necklace to your neckline is a subtle trick that creates a huge impact on an outfit.  When this pairing is off, it can make your outfit look mismatched and awkward, but choosing the right necklace can instantly pull your look together, creating an effortlessly chic ensemble.

If you’ve been wondering what style of necklace to wear with a boat neck, scoop neck, v neck, crew neck, square neck, button-down, or strapless top or dress, read on for our easy fashion styling tips!

strapless V_neck turtleneck square_neck crew_neck collared_shirt boat_neckBasic Tips:

  • When you are wearing a necklace which will rest above the shirt, you want the shape of the necklace to reflect the shape of the neckline (angular beads or pendants with a square neck, v-shaped necklaces and pendants with a v neck).  When you mix disparate shapes–voluminous round necklaces with a deep v, for example–things start to look “off”.
  • Pendants work particularly well with v neck shirts, because the weight of the pendant pulls the chain into a V shape.
  • When accessorizing a button-down shirt, chokers are best for people with long necks.  A pretty pendant hanging to just above the top button can lengthen the neck and add a bit of flair for those with shorter, wider necks.
  • Turtlenecks and boat neck tops look fabulous with long necklaces, layered or individually.
  • Crew or jewel necklines are perfect for showing off statement collars and bib-style necklaces.
  • Strapless tops or dresses are well-suited to choker necklaces, even for those who don’t have long necks.  The extra skin you are showing with this style of top creates the illusion of a longer neck.

Keep these ideas in mind next time you accessorize, and you may find yourself amazed at the big difference a little know-how can create when you apply it to your unique style!

Bohemian Style: Mixing Mexicali With What’s Already In Your Closet

Effortless hippie chic style is so easy to create when you integrate Mexicali pieces into the wardrobe you already own; a few well-chosen accessories can up the elegance of a playful skirt, or bring fashionable fierceness to a funky cotton dress!  Here are some of our favorite easy ways to change up your look with things you already own:

patchdressbeltBelt it!  Carly chose a laid-back leather belt with our polka dot patch dress for a seriously boho vibe, but you can also fancy up any casual dress if you go with something with a bit of sparkle, like a slim gold belt, or a wide elastic one with an elaborate buckle. Don’t be afraid to experiment!  Carly also embraces the hippie vibe of this adorable outfit with the organic seaside style of our hooked shells necklace–we love jewelry made of natural materials like wood or shells to make any outfit exotically earthy!

patchdressMake it urban chic with a trendy jacket, big hoop earrings, and a pashmina scarf.  The exact same dress has a completely different attitude with a simple accessory swap!

batikskirtcardiganEven the funkiest of flouncy skirts can easily transform from sassy to classy with a sweet and simple cardigan.  Wearing your favorite cardi with a fun skirt like our batik gypsy mini skirt brings the whimsy of the skirt down to earth, while keeping the cardigan from looking too matronly.  It’s the perfect balance!

ImageAdding a wide belt to a flirty mini skirt is a great way to get the sleek look of a high-waisted skirt, without the uncomfortable tightness over the belly.  We love this look with a top tucked in, highlighting a favorite retro tee or a solid top accented by a bold necklace, as Carly is doing here with our Goddess chain necklace.

Hopefully these outfits inspire you!  How do you integrate Mexicali clothing or accessories into the rest of your wardrobe?  Tell us your tips or share your awesome photos on our Facebook page; if we like your ideas, we just might feature YOU here on our blog!

Mexicali Every Day: Styling the Autumn Kurta Tunic Top

A traditional style that has remained popular throughout the ages, this free-flowing India kurta top brings an air of poetic romanticism to any occasion. Lightweight and comfortable, it looks lovely over leggings, jeans, or as a swimsuit cover-up to block the sun’s rays while keeping you cool. Add a chunky necklace or some bold earrings to create a look that is thoroughly hippie chic.

This fantastically flowy kurta top is the epitome of bohemian style, with more to it than meets the eye! With clever accessorizing and items from your own closet, sophisticated hippie style can be yours in a snap!

We challenged Carly to create three looks that use this easy top in new and unexpected ways!

In the first outfit, our Autumn kurta takes on a classic 60s feel, tucked into jeans and accessorized with a statement necklace and pretty beaded cuff.

Carly’s second look features a large scarf draped once around her neck and then belted with a slim belt, creating a unique “vest” that also highlights the smallest part of her waist. The attitude of this style can easily be changed from elegant to funky, depending on the scarf you choose!

The third look uses a wide belt and a tailored skirt with monochrome tights and boots. Emphasizing the voluminous slouch of the kurta top looks fabulous when you keep things balanced with a fitted bottom! We love the mix of classic and modern she has created!

How would YOU style the kurta top? We would love to hear your ideas!

Mexicali Every Day: Styling the Dahlia Overdye Dress

Made to Fair Trade standards, the dahlia overdye hippie dress is a brilliant patchwork of unique floral, striped, stonewashed, and swirling fabrics. With a v-neck top that can be tied around the neck like a halter or hooked into two loops on the back to be worn as a tank, this dress is versatile as well as flattering.

This sassy little strappy dress is the best thing ever for spinning and swaying at a groovy festival, but there is more to it than meets the eye! With a bit of layering creativity and awesome accessorizing, this fun frock can flit from sun dress to sophisticated Winter style in a snap!

We challenged Carly to create three looks that would be good for going out to a fancy dinner while retaining her bohemian style. It being January in Maine, she paired the dahlia dress with warm tights and boots to be sure she stays cozy. A classic black cardigan and elegant recycled silk scarf bring a polished panache to this outfit that perfectly strikes the balance between comfortable and cosmopolitan!

In Carly’s second outfit, the dahlia dress is layered over a mod turquoise turtleneck top, with a slim leather belt to emphasize the smallest part of her waist and add a luxurious feel.

Carly’s third look features the same sort of layering, with the dress over a long-sleeve top for warmth–and a thin leather belt to accentuate her waist–but in this case she has chosen a deep v-neck tee to show off one of our bold beaded fashion necklaces, for a bit of boho glamour!

How would YOU style the dahlia overdye dress? We would love to hear your ideas!

One Dress, 30 Days: Blogger Shows How Accessories Can Make an Outfit

Accessories can have an enormous impact on the simplest of outfits, and blogger Susan Stephenson is proving it this month with her “Dress to Impress” project. Building creative outfits around the same L.L. Bean Signature sweater dress each day throughout the month of January, Stephenson hopes to encourage women to make the most of their wardrobes and build outfits that help them put their best fashion foot forward!

In the above picture, Susan has brought bright bohemian style to the classic sweater dress with a Mexicali Blues recycled silk magic wrap skirt and a bold wooden fashion necklace. Pretty earrings by Leetie Lovendale for the Beadin’ Path and luxurious leather boots from Clarks USA round out this stylish outfit that perfectly blends exotic creativity and sophistication!

The goal of this project is to show women the myriad possibilities of professional, pulled-together outfits that can be created with a bit of creativity and the items already in their closets. Accessories are far more affordable than a completely new wardrobe, and this is a way to show women that they don’t need to feel that they can’t dress their best because they can’t afford it.

Stephenson’s project emphasizes the importance of creating the best possible outward impression, particularly for women currently seeking employment. All items used for this project will ultimately be donated to Dress for Success of Southern Maine, a non-profit organization that provides women in need with suits, accessories, and a big confidence boost to help in their own career development.

We are so pleased to be part of this awesome project, and hope it inspires and empowers women to take control of and pride in the way they present themselves in the professional and personal world! Follow along with Susan’s sartorial exploration here.

Peaceful Home Hippie Style Guide

Your home is your haven, and you probably spend most of your days at work; creating serene and positive environments in these spaces has the potential to influence your whole outlook on life! Clutter can be overwhelming, so the first step in creating a peaceful home or office is reducing it. Get organized by getting rid of what you don’t use or need, and use shelves or wall hooks to put your stuff in its proper place.

Use colors that you love to decorate your room. The color of light coming through a paper globe lantern or block print curtain panels can change the overarching hue, and thus the mood, of the whole space! There is an interesting psychology behind the way colors can influence our moods: Blue represents peace, tranquility, calm, and harmony. Find it at Mexicali in our blue vine indian tapestry or batik yoga flags.

Green represents nature, good luck, and renewal. Add a little green to your space with a jade buddha or unique hanging mobile

Red is associated with love, desire, speed, and strength. It is energetic rather than relaxing, but red accents in a room can be quite pleasing. Try a cheerful tie dye tapestry or rasta flag on your wall.

Purple represents spirituality, mystery, transformation, and enlightenment. It is wonderful color to incorporate into your space; try a lavender batik tapestry with a purple paper star lantern.

Yellow represents joy, happiness, and imagination. Add a pop of yellow to your home or office with the yellow batik mandala tapestry or a yellow submarine Beatles poster.

Decorate with items that make you feel peaceful, like tibetan prayer flags or a zen wall hanging that reminds you of a quality that is important to you, like peace, courage, love, or happiness.

Add natural elements like a wooden buddha, a fountain, or a plant to keep you grounded. Perhaps hang a soothing bamboo wind chime in a window for peaceful sounds.

Candles and incense are a great way to add ambiance to any room. Put a lavender-scented candle in a buddha candle holder, or burn some nag champa incense in a handpainted incense burner for a calming olfactory experience.

If you want to create a peaceful vibe in your bedroom, be sure to keep it cozy with a unique and soft hippie duvet or bohemian bedspread for your bed. Hang a buddha tapestry on the wall or a wooden namaste sign over the door, and you will be saying ohm as you drift off to sleep!

The Ultimate Guide to Hippie Style for Women

Hippie style is all about creative expression of your individuality, connection to nature and music, and comfort! A flowing skirt or a maxi dress is an integral part of the hippie wardrobe; long skirts are perfect for dancing wherever you go! A batik sarong is a versatile and colorful necessity in any hippie woman’s closet; wear it as a skirt, dress, or use it as a curtain or picnic blanket!

Tie dye pants, thai fisherman pants, or yoga pants are a great option when you will be climbing trees, hiking, or it is just too cold for a skirt! Pair them with a loose, hippie top, like a tie dye t shirt or kurta tunic. A buddha t shirt, bob marly t shirt, or grateful dead t shirt is another comfortable and awesome way to top off a cute hippie outfit.

Adding layers to your ensemble, like a cozy alpaca sweater or fashion scarf, can make an outfit even more gypsy chic, while keeping you warm as well! A wool hat, pair of fleece lined mittens, or mukluks in natural materials are not at all out of place in a stylish hippie outfit.

Adding earthy elements to your wardrobe (like an embroidered leather belt or wooden shell necklace) is key, because one of the most important tenets of hippie style is that natural is beautiful! Try a turquoise pendant or pair of shiva eye earrings to bring a touch of grounded glamour to a casual outfit.

A funky hobo bag or sling bag is the perfect way to carry all your supplies for a fun hippie day (maybe a footbag, pair of retro sunglasses, or a handmade notebook for writing down poetic thoughts and observations). A cross-body bag with a long strap is a necessary accessory for attending a concert or festival; try one made of hemp for an eco-friendly option.

Finally, no hippie outfit is complete without flowers and/or peace signs! Try peace sign earrings, a peace sign tie dye, or even a peace sign ring. A flower necklace, floral skirt, or calico dress is all you need to show the world that you are a flower child at heart.
